“There is one short, simple and perfectly correct answer.
We do not know, and we shall probably never know.”
– Professor Richard Atkinson, on being asked the purpose of Stonehenge, as cited by Aubrey Burl
‘STONEHENGE – A COMPLETE HISTORY’ (2006)
A 60-80 min. documentary on the making of ANCIENT SKIES and REMNANTS is planned for the Blu-Ray edition.
A camper van was equipped with a solar panel for battery charging. I plugged into mains power less than ten times during the entire location production process. All told I was on the road for about 170 days, and shot approx. 150 days / nights of timelapse and interviews.
All shoots were timed to coincide with full moon periods. Three principals took between took place between March and June of 2008 (Cornwall, Wales / Anglesey, and Scotland / The Hebrides / Cumbria). Orkney was shot in September 2009, Ireland in September / October of 2010, and seven trips to Stonehenge occurred periodically. The bulk of the UK interviews were conducted in 2011.
At the time the films began, the Canon 5D Mk2 camera had not yet been released, no faster CF capture cards than a Sandisk Extreme III existed, and no motion controls like the current industry standards – Dynamic Perception / Dito / Kessler – were available. About 60% of the films were shot with Canon 5D Mk1’s with specially commissioned ‘feathering’ electronics by Bryan Mumford, and a custom built track.
As at July 2013, here are some location stills from the shoots.
